  • American Studies

    The program in American studies offers an interdisciplinary study of the cultures, histories, experiences, values, and ideas that have formed and continue to form American society. The major is also designed to foster insights into the larger presence of the United States in a growing transnational community, including the interactions with and the influences of other countries’ intellectual interests on American life and society.

  • Anthropology

    Nazareth’s anthropology program takes an interdisciplinary approach with core courses in religious studies, sociology, and research methodology. It provides students with the conceptual and methodological tools needed to study anthropology from multiple perspectives, such as religion and ritual, social justice, feminism, terrorism, and war. Seniors are required to take a senior seminar, and service learning is a component of the Refugee Resettlement and Adaptation course. Students also enjoy study abroad opportunities, such as trips to Kenya to study the people and cultures of Africa.

  • Art (Studio)

    Students concentrate in the areas of painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, digital media, graphic design, illustration, and metals. They also study multiple media, tools, and techniques as well as the principles of aesthetics, art history, and art criticism. Guided by professors who are artists and mentors, the students develop the knowledge, skills, and aesthetic vision to produce high quality work in the competitive field of studio art.

    Program Highlights
    • Studio art majors must take a liberal arts core at Nazareth; this is not true of other schools. This emphasis on interdisciplinary studies enriches the artistic process. For example, students can study visual literacy in the communication and rhetoric department, or take chemistry to learn the chemical properties behind the materials they use.

  • Art Education

    Nazareth College is one the top-ranked schools in New York state for art education. Future teachers are taught to present the study and creation of art in exciting and significant ways while continuing its lifelong development in their own lives. Our approach to teaching art is not simply to have students follow an assignment or perfect a technique, but to find a reason to make meaningful art. A majority of art teachers in the area are Nazareth graduates.

    • As required by NYS, our art education students put in 100 field hours of observation and teaching in practicums and local schools. As graduates, they have taught in school systems locally and around the country. All are gifted artists and teachers who use their own talents to inspire others.

  • Art History

    This program challenges students to study art through the prisms of aesthetics, culture, and history. Students will learn the definitions of style and modes of execution; iconographic and other interpretive methods; and the economic, religious, philosophic, theoretic, and social factors that shape visual culture.

  • Asian Studies

    The interdisciplinary Asian studies program at Nazareth prepares students to meet the requirements of emerging global realities. Students benefit from course offerings across campus, targeted language training, and international experience. Majors in Asia studies choose one of two tracks: East Asia (primarily China and Japan) and South Asia (primarily India and Pakistan).

  • Biochemistry

    Nazareth’s biochemistry program provides opportunities for experiential learning such as undergraduate research, problem-based learning, and internships. Faculty mentor students on research projects such as the development of bio-fuels, characterization of proteins involved in blood coagulation, design of synthetic transcription factors, and analysis of small molecules in the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus subtilis. In addition, students participate in undergraduate summer research programs across the U.S. and abroad. The program prepares students for careers and graduate studies in a variety of fields including research, business, law, education, medicine, pharmaceutical sales, and other health related professions.

  • Biology

    In Nazareth’s biology program, students are mentored by biologists who assist them in the understanding of biology’s basic principles, discoveries, and theories. They learn how to develop the habits of a biologist—accurate observation, measurement, and analysis. They are also encouraged to think independently, and learning becomes less structured as they progress through the program. All students participate in independent research as a capstone project, and many students do field work and internships.

    Nazareth’s business administration program cultivates in students the business acumen they will need for today’s world.   • Chinese (Mandarin)

    The study of Chinese at Nazareth is an immersive experience that provides students with concentrated training in Mandarin, the standard modern Chinese language. In addition, students are exposed to the literature, history, culture, arts, and religions of China. The emphasis will be on preparing students for further study as translators and interpreters, and for corporate and government service, as well as preparing them for advanced study in the language and culture.

  • Communication and Rhetoric

  • Communication Sciences and Disorders

    To understand how children acquire language. To work with children with speech or language difficulties. To understand how people speak, how the inner ear affects balance, and what language means in our lives. These are all part of Nazareth College’s pre-professional program in communication sciences and disorders.

  • Community Youth Development (minor)

    CYD is an interdisciplinary minor that focuses on the premises (beliefs), principles (conceptualizations and theories), and practices of youth development. Being “community-based,” the minor incorporates a variety of opportunities for students to learn about the protective and risk factors that may or may not exist within youth’s families, neighborhoods, and communities.

    This minor is designed to:
    • Enrich students’ ability to connect their liberal arts and sciences coursework with interdisciplinary curricular experiences
    • Advance students’ critical thinking related to the social, psychological, and healthy development of young people

  • Digital Marketing and Design

    The Digital Marketing & Design minor complements study in any subject by giving students an opportunity to apply their major knowledge to media. Through the minor's required courses, students can learn to plan, write, organize, design printed publications, and create websites, both individually and in collaborative groups. This minor is unique because it combines courses from diverse disciplines (Information Technology, Communication and Rhetoric, and Graphic Design).

  • Education (Adolescence)

    Nazareth’s adolescent education program prepares students to teach grades 7–12. You will learn about the characteristics of adolescent learners, the skills and methodologies you will need to reach young adults at different learning levels, and how to use classroom technology to capture their imaginations. Students learn how to be educators, role models, mentors, part-allies and part-disciplinarians—to be middle and high school teachers.

  • Education (Inclusive)

    Nazareth’s inclusive childhood/early childhood education major gives students the tools to create a successful inclusive classroom that embraces kids of all learning levels. Our faculty is unique in that we are equal opportunity educators. Rather than viewing children as “normal” or “with special needs,” we look at children across all dimensions of diversity and focus on their strengths. Also unique to Nazareth is our “quad certification,” which certifies teachers in childhood, middle childhood, students with disabilities at the childhood level, and students with disabilities at the middle childhood level. Our coursework, along with a major emphasis on fieldwork, often results in a high placement rate for our graduates.

  • English Literature

    All English department students are educated in the history of English literature and in contemporary techniques of literary analysis. Students study diverse and contemporary literary and cultural genres, including courses on film, graphic novels, and experimental fiction. They also take coursework outside the classroom. We aim to help students “find out how literature matters in the world,” appreciate the power of the written word, and hone the writing and analytical skills that will serve them throughout life.

  • Environmental Science

    Studying ocean health, protecting endangered species, measuring the effects of development on vanishing habitats, advocating for public policy—an environmental science degree gives students a broad view of environmental issues in their political, social, and economic contexts as well as the scientific skills to become effective stewards of the planet.   • French

    The study of French at Nazareth is not simply about conjugating verbs or sitting in language labs. It is an immersive experience where students study French culture and literature, enjoy trips to Montreal, cook Breton-style dinners, and spend a year in Rennes, France. At the heart of the program is Maison Française, a residential hall for 13 students interested in the French language and the Francophone culture, and a cultural meeting place for Le Cercle Français and Francophiles in the Rochester community.

  • Gerontology (minor)

    Gerontology is a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding every aspect of human functioning in the later years. Courses in Nazareth’s gerontology minor draw upon disciplines such as the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences, with a perspective that reflects the complexity of the environments within which individuals live and age.

    Nazareth’s music therapy program studies the impact of melody, harmony, and rhythm on children and adults with physical, communication, emotional, and cognitive disabilities. Students participate in hands-on clinical training, working directly with clients both in the community and in Nazareth’s on-campus music therapy clinic, part of the College’s Rehabilitation and Wellness Clinics. As part of their clinical practice, students learn to improvise and compose music for guitar and piano.   • Occupational Therapy

    Nazareth’s occupational therapy program will educate students to work with individuals with impairments or disabilities to develop or regain the “occupations” that are meaningful in their lives. This may involve helping a person improve his or her ability to perform daily living tasks, assisting a child to learn in school, enabling an individual to engage in social relationships and community activities, or providing interventions needed to resume job duties that have been impacted by illness or injury.   • Religious Studies

    In this program, students join a community of scholars who engage in the academic study of religion from the perspectives of education, psychology, art, music, literature, and social work. We study the themes common to all religions, which furthers the acceptance and understanding of different faiths. We look at how religion is shaped and influenced by society, and we confront ethical issues and learn how culture shapes religious beliefs.     Women and gender studies at Nazareth College provides a broad-based community for interdisciplinary scholarship and inquiry focusing on women, gender, and sexualities.
